After nearly 40 years... Tom Cruise returns to the «Days of Thunder» track with Anne Hathaway

After decades of appearing behind the wheel of a race car in the film “Days of Thunder,” Tom Cruise is preparing to return to his former persona as a speed racer, alongside Anne Hathaway, in the new installment.

Hathaway will play a racing team owner and engineer, while Cruise reprises his role as driver Cole Trickle. Paramount Pictures has set the film’s theatrical release for mid-2028, roughly four decades after the original film’s 1990 debut.

Full plot details remain under wraps, but the project will be shot specifically for IMAX screens, with plans to also present it in Dolby Cinema formats.

Cruise also shared a promotional image featuring him and Hathaway on a NASCAR racetrack, offering the first clear visual hint of their return to the high-speed world together.

Jonathan Levine will direct the film, with Cruise producing alongside veteran producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Tommy Harper. The project follows Cruise’s reduced involvement in the “Mission: Impossible” franchise, as work continues on a new film set in the “Top Gun” universe.

The original film introduced Cruise as a young driver entering the world of professional racing, alongside Robert Duvall, Nicole Kidman, Randy Quaid, and John C. Reilly.

The new installment bets on a blend of nostalgia for the original film and modern cinematic presentation technologies to bring the race back to the big screen.
