After Trump's executive order, Google Maps changes the name of Lake Ontario to 'Lake America'

Google changed the name of Lake Ontario to “Lake America” on its maps in the United States on Sunday, in line with a decision announced by U.S. President Donald Trump.

The U.S.-based tech giant stated that users in Canada would continue to see the name “Lake Ontario,” which has been officially used since the 17th century.

Google clarified that it made the change in accordance with the U.S. Geographic Names Information System, an official federal database.

The company wrote on its blog: “As we update Google Maps to reflect name changes from official government sources, users within the United States will see the name Lake America, while users in Canada will continue to see Lake Ontario. Users outside the United States and Canada will see both names.”

This follows Trump’s unilateral change of the name “Gulf of Mexico” to “Gulf of America” in January 2025.

Lake Ontario is the smallest of the five Great Lakes, which stretch along the Canada–U.S. border, specifically between Ontario province and the U.S. state of New York.
