Raid in Mexico uncovers farm hiding 135 animals, including endangered species

A raid targeting illegal fuel trafficking in northeastern Mexico turned into a large-scale wildlife rescue after authorities discovered 135 animals of exotic, threatened, or protected species at a farm, including tigers, lions, jaguars, hyenas, monkeys, bison, and even a camel.

The discovery came during inspections of five sites in the cities of Tampico and Altamira, in the state of Tamaulipas, where Mexican authorities also seized approximately 68,000 liters of diesel fuel and equipment linked to fuel storage and transport.

The animals included five Bengal tigers, three jaguars, three African lions, 21 monkeys, two hyenas, as well as bison, buffalo, sulcata tortoises, and other species.

According to authorities, at least 35 of the animals belong to species classified under various levels of danger or protection according to Mexican environmental standards, while other species are regulated under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

Rather than remaining at the site, the animals were placed under the care of Mexico’s Federal Attorney’s Office for Environmental Protection to undergo veterinary assessment and receive appropriate care and housing.

Authorities announced the arrest of one person in connection with the raids, while the seized sites remain under guard to allow investigations to continue.
