Glacial collapse in the Himalayas creates a temporary dam... How did Nepal's flood turn into a devastating disaster?

Preliminary scientific analyses revealed that the sudden flood that struck northern Nepal near the Tibet border on Wednesday was not merely the direct result of heavy seasonal rains, but likely formed part of a rapid sequence of events initiated by a massive collapse of ice and rock in the Himalayas.

According to experts, a section of a glacier collapsed and fell approximately 1,200 meters to the valley floor, carrying rocks and soil with it before the debris reached the Linde River.

The accumulation of debris formed a fragile natural dam that temporarily held back water, before collapsing and releasing a dense wave of water, mud, and rocks through the valleys.

Measurements showed the river level rose by about nine meters within half an hour, doubling the flood’s destructive capacity and causing widespread damage to homes, roads, and bridges.

The causes of the collapse remain under investigation, with researchers examining the effects of snowmelt, rising temperatures, and ice instability, while no direct causal link to an earthquake mentioned in initial reports has been confirmed.
