"The Phantom Line" Tests the Limits of AI Vision: A Message Appears with Motion and Disappears When Stopped

In a new visual experiment that reveals the differing ways humans and machines perceive text, designer Eric Liu developed a project called “Ghost Script,” which relies on the movement of dots to display messages that humans can distinguish during video playback but are difficult to read from still frames.
As the Daily Mail explained, the dots forming the letters move in a direction different from the background, making the words visible to the human eye, while blending into visual noise when the clip is paused. The project also includes a phantom message that could lead some artificial intelligence models to interpret unintended content.
The developer of the experiment stated that he tested it on advanced AI models, which struggled to identify the original message, noting the potential to leverage the concept in developing tests that distinguish humans from robots.
However, “Ghost Script” is not a guaranteed encryption or protection method, as specialized motion analysis technologies or more advanced models may be able to decode the message in the future. Therefore, the project remains a research and artistic experiment that highlights a temporary gap between human perception and computer vision.
