Italian Football Federation withdraws support for Infantino's FIFA presidency bid

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has withdrawn its support for Gianni Infantino’s candidacy in the 2027 FIFA presidential election. FIGC President Giovanni Malagò stated, “We will continue to work alongside UEFA and other European federations to promote a model of football based on merit, solidarity, and sustainability, with fans at the center.” He emphasized that this decision clearly and transparently reflects the FIGC’s position, fully aligned with UEFA and its president, Aleksander Čeferin, regarding recent initiatives proposed by FIFA’s president in the areas of governance and the development of international competitions. Malagò added, “We find ourselves in a model based on dialogue, listening, and shared responsibility, which has allowed football to grow and innovate while defending its foundational principles.” This move comes amid growing criticism of Infantino’s management policies at FIFA and his latest proposal to transform the World Cup into an expanded investment project, sparking calls for his resignation as soon as possible.
