Archaeological treasures in Lebanon unearthed despite crises and wars

Archaeological discoveries in Lebanon continue to reveal new chapters of the country’s history, despite crises and war, with remains dating to successive civilizations and epochs ranging from the Phoenician and Roman periods to the Byzantine, Fatimid, and Ottoman eras.

Agence France-Presse reported that excavations in the town of Maaser El Chouf in Mount Lebanon uncovered the remains of a massive Roman temple measuring approximately 21 meters in length and 11 meters in width, surrounded by rock-cut tombs and areas designated for productive activities, indicating the emergence of an integrated community around the temple.

In the coastal city of Byblos, excavation teams discovered a Roman olive press that remained in use during the Byzantine period, alongside weaving and spinning tools and ceramic weights. Nearby sites have also revealed stone quarries and remains dating to the Phoenician, Persian, Roman, and Ottoman eras.

In Beirut, excavation work linked to construction projects continues, with the remains of a Roman olive press coming to light, while efforts persist to locate parts of the ancient hippodrome.

These discoveries coincide with enhanced international efforts to protect Lebanon’s heritage, amid the risks posed by war to numerous historical sites.
