Egypt reiterates the necessity of adhering to the US-Iran memorandum of understanding to de-escalate tensions

Egyptian Foreign Minister Dr. Badr Abdelatty reiterated the necessity of adhering to the US-Iran memorandum of understanding and implementing its agreed-upon provisions, describing it as a constructive step toward de-escalating tensions and enhancing security and stability in the region. This came during a telephone conversation on Tuesday between Abdelatty and US Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff, which covered developments in the regional situation and efforts to contain tensions, according to a statement from the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During the call, Abdelatty stressed the importance of intensifying regional and international efforts to de-escalate tensions, prevent the conflict from widening, and prioritize political, diplomatic, and dialogue-based solutions to address current crises, thereby sparing the region further instability and safeguarding the security and interests of its countries and peoples.

The two sides also discussed the security and freedom of navigation in international waterways. Abdelatty emphasized the need to guarantee the freedom, security, and safety of navigation, ensure that ship movements are not obstructed, and comply with relevant international law. He underscored the critical importance of freedom of navigation for international trade, supply chains, and energy security, and called for shielding international waterways from the repercussions of escalation and regional tensions.
