Omani Foreign Minister: Hopes for announcement soon of a temporary corridor in the Strait of Hormuz and arrangements for the resumption of navigation
Omani Foreign Minister Badr Al Busaidi said he held a “constructive” dialogue with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi in Tehran on Tuesday, expressing hope for the imminent announcement of a temporary passage through the Strait of Hormuz and for practical arrangements to restore safe navigation.
Minister Al Busaidi added via his X (formerly Twitter) account that this would be followed, at the appropriate time, by “steps concerning the future management of the strait and reaching a permanent solution, in accordance with Article Five of the (Islamabad) memorandum.”
He noted that discussions would also be held with regional partners to support peace, cooperation, stability, and freedom of navigation.
The Omani and Iranian sides had previously issued a joint statement following consultations between the two foreign ministers in Tehran, announcing discussions on an interim framework that would provide a practical and implementable basis in light of the current situation in the Strait of Hormuz. This included a proposal to establish a joint temporary navigation passage through the strait and to agree on implementing a joint project to clear it of mines.
The Omani Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the “constructive” consultations focused on the importance both countries attach to resuming safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, in a manner that safeguards their sovereignty and sovereign rights.
It clarified that technical negotiations between the two sides would continue “with the aim of reaching an agreement on a permanent navigation passage and future arrangements for the management of the strait, as well as establishing a mechanism for information exchange and the management of navigation traffic, and providing related navigational and security services.”
It pointed out that both sides emphasized the importance of holding joint discussions with the countries bordering the Gulf waters, and stressed the necessity of adhering to the provisions of international law and respecting the sovereign rights of coastal states.
