Interior Ministry: 75 KD fine for phone violation, which may reach 300 KD in court

Major Shahin Al-Gharib, head of the television department at the Security Media Management in the Ministry of Interior, stated that the new traffic law establishes a comprehensive system for handling traffic violations, aimed at reinforcing legal compliance, raising road safety standards, and protecting lives. He emphasized that the objective of implementing the law is not to collect fines, but to curb erroneous traffic behaviors that have led to numerous accidents, resulting in fatalities and injuries.

Al-Gharib, during an appearance on the Second Radio Program, clarified that most traffic violations can be settled immediately through a settlement order in accordance with established procedures. However, certain violations classified as serious are handled differently due to their severity and direct impact on road users’ safety; these are referred to the Traffic Court, where settlement orders are not permitted.

He explained that referring a violation to the court does not necessarily mean the fine will remain at the settlement order amount. For instance, the fine for using a mobile phone while driving is 75 dinars under a settlement order, but if the case is referred to court, the fine may rise to 150 dinars, with a maximum of 300 dinars or imprisonment for up to three months.
