Mazloum Abdi announces the dissolution of the Syrian Democratic Forces as an independent military force
President Ahmad al-Sharaa received Mazloum Abdi and his accompanying delegation at the People’s Palace in Damascus, in the presence of Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Asaad al-Shaybani and Deir ez-Zor Governor Ziad al-Ayesh.
During the meeting on Tuesday, several files related to integration into Syrian state institutions and steps concerning the upcoming phase were discussed, aiming to strengthen the state’s presence and support security and stability.
Earlier, Mazloum Abdi announced the completion of the mission of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and their dissolution as an independent military force, following the full integration of their units into Syrian Army brigades. He emphasized that this step comes within the framework of transitioning to a new phase characterized by peace, stability, and the building of a new Syria.
Speaking at a press conference at the People’s Palace in Damascus, Abdi stated that “the country has entered a new phase characterized by peace and the building of a new Syria.” He noted that following the agreement with President Ahmad al-Sharaa and the completion of the integration of forces into Syrian Army brigades, the dissolution of the SDF as an independent military force is being announced today.
He added, “We want this day to mark the beginning of a genuine transition from battlefields to construction sites, and from the era of weapons to the era of peace,” affirming that the memory of martyrs and their sacrifices would remain present in the collective consciousness.
Regarding education in the Kurdish language, Abdi said, “President al-Sharaa has affirmed on several occasions our right to education in Kurdish. We have sought an open stance toward this right and aim to develop this decision in the future.” He pointed out that efforts would be made to implement the decision on Kurdish-language education during the current year, laying the groundwork for future developments.
Abdi concluded by saying, “We want to build a new Syria for all its people—Kurds, Arabs, Turkmens, and Assyrians—a unified and stable Syria that protects the future of its children and ensures a dignified life for them.”
