Widespread welcome for Syria’s removal from the «State Sponsors of Terrorism» list: A positive development that enhances security and stability
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia welcomed the announcement by the United States of America of its approval of the decision to remove the Syrian Arab Republic from the list of state sponsors of terrorism. The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a statement carried by the official news agency, SPA, yesterday, that the Kingdom extends its sincere congratulations to the government and people of the fraternal Syrian Arab Republic on this step, and wishes Syria continued security, stability, and prosperity, as well as the continuation of its construction and development path to realize the aspirations of its people.
The United Arab Emirates and Qatar also welcomed the US decision, considering it a positive step that contributes to supporting efforts aimed at achieving stability in Syria and the region. For its part, Turkey welcomed the decision, stating that it accelerates efforts to strengthen Syria’s relations with the international community and establish security and stability.
On his part, Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Jassem Al-Budaiwi welcomed the US announcement of the approval of the decision to remove Syria’s designation as a state sponsor of terrorism. Al-Budaiwi emphasized in a statement that this step represents a positive development that will support efforts to enhance security and stability in Syria and create suitable conditions to advance recovery and development paths, meeting the aspirations of the fraternal Syrian people for a future characterized by security, stability, and prosperity. He reiterated the GCC’s firm and supportive position regarding Syria’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, calling on the international community to continue its efforts and steps supporting the Syrian leadership and people.
For its part, the US Embassy in Damascus stated that the removal of Syria’s designation as a state sponsor of terrorism constitutes another step in its journey from isolation to partnership, and another cornerstone in a new relationship between the two countries based on shared interests. In a post on its official account on the “X” platform, the embassy stated: “Another historic achievement added to the bold vision of the US President in granting Syria an opportunity, as Secretary of State Marco Rubio officially removed Syria’s designation as a state sponsor of terrorism. This is another decisive step in Damascus’s extraordinary journey from isolation to partnership, and from a source of terrorism to a committed partner in the global war against it.”
The embassy added that “this designation has long served as another wall separating the Syrian people from the investments, projects, and opportunities necessary to rebuild their country. Today, another wall falls, as capital can replace war, projects can replace isolation, and trade can continue its victory over chaos.”
The embassy stressed that this is not merely about removing a designation, but represents another cornerstone in a new relationship between the United States and Syria, based on shared interests, mutual security, and shared prosperity. It also serves as another example of translating the US President’s vision, based on the principle of “security first, then prosperity,” into tangible reality.
Previously, the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control announced the day before yesterday the removal of Syria’s name from the list of state sponsors of terrorism, after completing the legal procedures related to Congressional review without registering any objections.
