An American lake the size of a state has disappeared... its water bodies have turned into a speed racing track

Thousands of years ago, vast stretches of Utah, Nevada, and Idaho were submerged beneath the waters of Lake Bonneville, a colossal lake that at its peak covered an area roughly equivalent to that of Lake Michigan.

But as the waters receded, they left behind one of the most unusual landscapes in the United States: vast, flat plains blanketed by white layers of salt.

This terrain has evolved from a mere geological relic into a natural laboratory for speed and engineering.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the Bonneville Salt Flats have been used for auto racing since 1914. Their exceptionally hard and smooth surface later transformed them into the world’s most famous venue for land speed records.

On these flats, speed barriers of 480, 640, 800, and 970 kilometers per hour have been broken, as shown in images released by NASA.

The area has also been used for amateur rocket launches, film and commercial photography, and has become a destination for technical tests and adventures that are difficult to conduct on ordinary terrain.

In a post published today, August 24, 2026, NASA noted that an image captured last June by the Landsat 8 satellite clearly shows the remnants of the ancient landscape: mountains rising amid pale expanses that were once the bed of a vast lake.

Ironically, the disappearance of the lake did not end its story; rather, it created a unique surface that allowed humans to later test how fast machines could go.
