Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Dr. Majid al-Ansari, said that Doha has continued its mediation efforts in recent weeks with both the United States and Iran to bring them back to the negotiating table.
Al-Ansari emphasized during his weekly press briefing in the capital, Doha, that “all Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries support reaching a peaceful resolution to the crisis between the United States and Iran,” adding that “there is full coordination among GCC states to address various escalation scenarios.”
He continued: “We have stressed from day one that any escalation in the region would have repercussions throughout the region and across the world,” stressing that “the situation in the Strait of Hormuz must return to its pre-crisis state, and we affirm the necessity of freedom of navigation in the strait.”
He noted that “Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz violates the freedom of navigation enshrined in international law.”
Al-Ansari expressed Qatar’s rejection of “Iran’s attempts to drag regional countries into conflicts whenever they are attacked by a third party.”
He said that “unilateral U.S. sanctions on Iran” remain in place, reiterating that “the priority is to reach an agreement among all parties. We support mediation efforts to resolve the crisis,” and stressing that “Qatar does not support any side against another.”
The Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson also emphasized that “our armed forces and all our institutions in Qatar are ready to respond to any threat from any party.”
