Study and Design of 'Deep Tunnels': Public Works Tender in December Next Year

Kuwait officials: The Ministry of Public Works is preparing to launch a tender for the preliminary study and design of a deep tunnel system in the State of Kuwait in December next year, as part of the contracts and projects scheduled for the 2026/2027 fiscal year. This step represents a new development in the project’s trajectory, which aims to enhance the rainwater drainage system and protect the environment and populated areas from flood risks.
The study focuses on developing an integrated system designed to prevent any runoff from being diverted into the Kuwait Bay, by connecting emergency lines for all stations and rainwater outlets to the tunnels. This will enhance the drainage system’s capacity to handle flows during emergencies and rainy seasons.
The project also aims to mitigate the environmental impacts resulting from the discharge of sewage into the sea during emergencies, thereby contributing to reduced pollution and the protection of the marine environment and aquatic life.
From a service perspective, the project seeks to reduce future flood risks, particularly during rainy seasons and emergency situations, and to protect populated areas and road users from the dangers of water accumulation and flooding. This supports the readiness of infrastructure to cope with climatic and emergency conditions.
According to the expected timeline, the project’s implementation period will last 1,095 days. The tender is scheduled to be announced in December 2026, with the current phase focusing on the study and preliminary design of the system.
The launch of the tender marks a new step in the development of an integrated system for managing rainwater and sewage, enhancing the protection of the marine environment and raising safety levels for residential areas and the road network in the face of flood risks.
