The Bar Association Launches the "Specialized Lawyer" Initiative to Enhance Competence and Cultivate Specialized Legal Expertise

The Kuwait Lawyers Association launched the “Specialized Lawyer” initiative yesterday, as part of its strategy to enhance the professional competence of lawyers and keep pace with the growing expansion of specializations and the increasing complexity of disputes and transactions in the legal, judicial, and economic environments.

Speaking to Al-Anbaa on the sidelines of the initiative’s launch, Secretary-General Dr. Khaled Al-Suwaijan emphasized that the concept of legal practice is no longer limited to a general familiarity with branches of law. Modern practice now requires in-depth knowledge and practical experience in specific legal fields, particularly with the evolution of legislation related to companies, capital markets, investment, intellectual property, sports disputes, arbitration, and other specialized sectors.

Al-Suwaijan added that the initiative does not aim to confer formal titles or certificates, but rather to establish genuine professional pathways that enable lawyers to choose and deepen their expertise in areas that suit them, by combining legal knowledge with practical application, and by keeping abreast of relevant legislation, rulings, and modern practices.

He noted that the initiative encompasses several professional tracks, including criminal, administrative, civil, and family law; commercial, corporate, and capital markets law; intellectual property law; professional liability and sports disputes; as well as international law and international arbitration.

Al-Suwaijan highlighted that one of the initiative’s key objectives is to develop lawyers’ careers in alignment with their capabilities and interests, and to create a clearer pathway for building professional expertise, rather than leaving specialization to individual initiative alone.

He stressed that specialization does not mean restricting a lawyer to a single branch of law or disconnecting them from other legal fields. Rather, an outstanding lawyer must possess broad legal culture alongside deep expertise in one or more areas.

He further explained that the initiative’s impact extends beyond developing lawyers; it also aims to raise the quality of legal services provided to litigants, companies, and institutions, improve case preparation and advisory services, and strengthen the capacity of Kuwaiti law firms to build professional specializations capable of competing locally and regionally.

He pointed out that launching the initiative marks the beginning of a pathway that will be continuously developed through program evaluation, leveraging the expertise of specialists and practitioners, and adding new fields in line with the profession’s needs and legislative and judicial developments.

Concluding his remarks, Al-Suwaijan said: “Our goal with the Specialized Lawyer initiative is not to add a new title to lawyers, but to add genuine value to the legal profession. The future of the profession rests on lawyers who are broadly knowledgeable, deeply specialized, and capable of keeping pace with the rapid developments in law, the economy, and society.”
