Employee who stole government data and sold it to a computer shop arrested by Criminal Investigation Department

The Criminal Security sector, represented by the General Directorate of Criminal Investigations – Capital Governorate Criminal Investigations Department, succeeded in uncovering the circumstances surrounding the theft of several storage drives belonging to a government entity and apprehending the suspect, a Kuwaiti national employed by the same entity.

The incident came to light during an inventory audit at a government agency, which revealed the missing storage drives. Criminal investigation officers launched a search and inquiry operation, utilizing modern technical means, which led to identifying the suspect.

Investigations revealed that the suspect exploited the building’s emptiness of employees and visitors to steal the storage drives, subsequently selling them to a computer hardware shop. Criminal investigation officers managed to recover part of the stolen items.

The Ministry of Interior stated that criminal investigation officers identified the suspect’s location, apprehended him, and confronted him with the findings of the investigation. The suspect confessed to committing the theft and selling the drives, affirming that his intention was not to access the information and data stored on them.

The Ministry emphasized that the suspect has a history of previous convictions for various theft cases and had recently been released from the Central Prison. It noted that appropriate legal procedures have been initiated against him and that he has been referred to the competent authorities.

Notably, criminal investigation officers extracted video footage showing the suspect selling the drives, which was submitted to the Public Prosecution and attached to the referral report.
