Greek authorities are trying to unravel the mystery behind the change in color of a small lake in the northwest of the country to pink. Local reports indicated that the waters of a small lake near the Makrygialia beach in the Igoumenitsa area turned pink, as reported by Sky News Arabia citing the Kathimerini newspaper. Greek authorities are examining an increase in bacteria associated with a sudden rise in water salinity, considering it a potential cause for the color change. This discoloration is likely attributed to a dense proliferation of organisms such as purple sulfur bacteria, which impart this striking color to the water. Similar phenomena are mostly recorded in shallow, stagnant waters, where salinity levels rise due to evaporation, temperatures increase, and oxygen levels drop significantly. Additionally, the decomposition of plants and other organic matter in the lake can create suitable conditions for the growth of such microorganisms. However, accurately determining the cause of this phenomenon requires laboratory analysis of water samples.
