Apple Changes the Game with iPhone 18

Apple is preparing to change one of its most enduring traditions in the smartphone market, as reports indicate that its anticipated event next September will not see the launch of the full iPhone 18 lineup, marking a significant shift from the approach the company has followed for years of unveiling its new models all at once. According to Macworld, Apple is expected to focus its event on its higher-end phones, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, along with its first foldable phone, rumored to be called the iPhone Ultra, while the standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e, as well as the second-generation iPhone Air, will be absent. Reports suggest the company is moving to split the launch of its new phones into two stages for the first time, with the premium models taking center stage at the autumn event, while the more affordable phones will move to a second launch window in spring 2027. This strategy would give Apple two opportunities per year to highlight its phones, rather than releasing up to six devices at once, while also easing pressure on manufacturing and supply chains. Another notable absence is the iPhone Air 2; according to reports, the company plans to keep the current generation on sale for several additional months before potentially launching its successor alongside the iPhone 18 and 18e in spring 2027, amid talk of upgrading its components and adding a second camera to enhance its appeal. For consumers, the new schedule means that those looking to purchase Apple’s more affordable latest phones may have to wait until next year, while the September event will effectively become a platform for the higher-priced and more advanced models in the iPhone lineup.
