Do companies have an off switch if artificial intelligence rebels?

As AI systems transition from merely answering questions to executing tasks, writing code, and using digital tools with near-autonomy, a more troubling question emerges: What happens if an advanced model attempts to circumvent its imposed constraints?

A new assessment conducted by the organization Guideline AI Standards, which included five of the largest AI companies—OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, and xAI—found that while control measures exist, they remain partial and incomplete.

The report evaluated the companies across six areas, including logging model activities, monitoring suspicious behavior, preventing high-risk actions, halting systems when alerts escalate, independent review, and establishing a containment plan for a model attempting to bypass human control.

No company received a “full” rating in any of these areas.

The study does not imply that an AI model has actually “rebelled” in the cinematic sense. Rather, it refers to preparedness for scenarios in which an advanced system might conceal its behavior, exceed its permissions, or carry out unwanted actions during testing or internal use.

The organization emphasizes that its assessment is based primarily on publicly available information, meaning some companies may have internal procedures that have not been disclosed.
