Spent 12 Years Among Wolves... The Passing of 'Spain's Mowgli,' Who Tested Life in the Wild

Marcus Rodriguez Pantocha, known as “Mowgli” after the boy of the jungle, has died at the age of 80. The Spanish man’s extraordinary childhood in the Sierra Morena mountains became one of Europe’s most famous stories of “children raised in the wild,” after he spent many years away from human society.

Rodriguez was born in 1946 in the province of Cordoba amid extreme poverty. According to his own account and a biography later studied by researchers, his father sent him as a child to an elderly shepherd in the mountains, after which he found himself alone following the man’s death. Between the ages of about seven and nineteen, he lived away from human settlements, learning to hunt, forage for food, and imitate animal sounds.

Rodriguez claimed that his relationship with wolves went beyond mere coexistence, describing them in later interviews as closer to family, and insisting that his years in the mountains were among the happiest of his life. However, some of the more unusual details in his account rely primarily on his personal testimony, making them difficult to verify independently.

He was discovered in the 1960s and reintegrated into society, but later said that adapting to human life was harder than living in the wild, and that he had been exploited and deceived for years. He eventually settled in the village of Ranti in Galicia.
