Ministers of Irrigation and Housing: Julius Nyerere Project a Major Developmental Achievement and a Shining Model of African Cooperation
Cairo – Nadeh Imam: Dr. Hany Sweilam, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, and Eng. Rand El-Menshawy, Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, participated in the official opening ceremony of the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Dam and Station project on the Rufiji River in the United Republic of Tanzania. The project is being implemented by the Egyptian Joint Alliance, comprising Al-Mokawloon Al-Arab and Swedelectric, as part of a high-level delegation headed by Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, Prime Minister, on behalf of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.
For his part, Dr. Hany Sweilam emphasized that the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project is one of Tanzania’s most significant national projects, with a generation capacity of 2,115 megawatts, thereby supporting Tanzania’s energy needs and development plans. He noted that the project, located on the Rufiji River within Tanzanian territory and part of a national water basin, represents a major developmental achievement for the Tanzanian state and serves as a model for strategic projects capable of driving a qualitative leap in infrastructure and the energy sector.
Sweilam pointed out that the execution of this massive project by an Egyptian alliance including Al-Mokawloon Al-Arab and Swedelectric reflects the strength and resilience of Egyptian-Tanzanian partnership, as well as confidence in Egyptian expertise and capabilities in executing large-scale and complex projects.
The Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation highlighted that cooperation between Egypt and Tanzania in the field of water resources dates back to 2007, during which several groundwater well projects were implemented to provide drinking water. He clarified that procedures are currently underway to finalize the bilateral cooperation framework between the two countries in the water and irrigation sector, paving the way for a new phase of cooperation that includes the implementation of 30 additional groundwater wells, the construction of two rainwater harvesting dams, and training and capacity-building programs.
For her part, Eng. Rand El-Menshawy expressed her pleasure at participating in the official opening of the Julius Nyerere Dam and Power Station in the United Republic of Tanzania. She affirmed that this project represents a shining example of partnership and cooperation between Egypt and its brothers in Africa, embodying the Egyptian state’s commitment, under the leadership of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, to strengthening Egypt-Africa relations and supporting development efforts across the continent toward a more sustainable future. This commitment has been reflected in the expansion of Egyptian companies into African markets and their increased participation in developmental projects.
The Minister of Housing extended her gratitude and appreciation to all workers and officials responsible for implementing the Julius Nyerere Dam and Power Station project, both Egyptians and Tanzanian brothers, for their sincere efforts and continuous work throughout the various stages of the project. She expressed her pride in the achievements realized in this massive national and strategic project, implemented by an Egyptian alliance comprising Al-Mokawloon Al-Arab and Swedelectric, with investments totaling approximately $2.9 billion. This reflects the expertise and technical and execution capabilities of Egyptian national companies, which qualify them to compete strongly in executing major projects internationally, particularly in Africa.
Eng. Rand El-Menshawy stressed that the Julius Nyerere Dam and Power Station project goes beyond being merely an energy project; it embodies a comprehensive vision for development and demonstrates the capacity of Egyptian-Tanzanian cooperation to transform shared aspirations into tangible developmental projects with real impact. She explained that the project contributes to meeting Tanzania’s brothers’ needs for stable energy, supports development and production sectors, notably agriculture and energy, thereby enhancing the foundations of economic and social growth and opening broader horizons for cooperation between the two countries in various fields.
