Meta has launched a standalone app for its artificial intelligence assistant, Meta AI, on Mac devices, a move that expands the assistant’s presence from mobile apps and the web to the desktop computing environment. According to Al Jazeera Net, the app is currently available in a beta version and adds capabilities designed to leverage the workflow context within macOS, rather than relying solely on the traditional chat experience.
A key feature of the new app is the ability to share a window from a Mac with Meta AI, enabling the assistant to analyze the displayed content and provide answers or suggestions related to the user’s current work. Meta states that this function can be used to obtain assistance while working on various documents or applications, without the need to copy and paste content into the chat window.
The feature utilizes Meta’s AI models, with the company highlighting the Muse Spark model in the context of the assistant’s ability to understand screen content. This signifies a shift from the assistant merely processing text typed by the user to leveraging information present within the actual work context. The app also offers a voice dictation feature that works across various Mac applications. According to TechCrunch, users can speak, and Meta AI will convert their speech into text within the apps, providing an alternative input method to the keyboard and reducing the need to switch between applications while typing.
This feature is particularly significant for tasks that involve writing large volumes of text, as the assistant becomes part of the input process itself, rather than just an independent window for inquiries. Meta has not positioned the app solely as a tool for answering questions; it has also integrated it with a suite of functions aimed at small businesses and content creators. Eligible users can link their professional accounts on Facebook and Instagram, along with ad campaigns and Google Workspace tools, to analyze performance and complete certain content-related and operational tasks. The company notes that Meta AI can analyze metrics such as reach and post engagement, using this data to offer suggestions for future content. It can also assist in preparing presentations, documents, and spreadsheets, as well as executing repetitive tasks such as generating periodic performance reports.
This direction reflects an attempt to transform Meta AI from a general chatbot into an assistant capable of handling workflows, particularly for users who already rely on Meta services to manage their businesses and digital accounts.
