Paying attention to your body's symptoms may redirect your immunity against infections

A recent scientific study revealed that listening to the body’s signals and focusing on the sensations resulting from inflammation, rather than ignoring them, can positively contribute to changing and regulating the immune response, challenging the common belief that distraction is always the best option for coping with pain and physical discomfort.

Researchers based their experiments on skin prick tests with histamine to study allergic reactions. Participants were asked to focus fully on the sensations in the irritated prick areas during some sessions, while in other sessions they were distracted by watching videos or focusing on abstract shapes to compare the differences.

The results showed a striking paradox: when participants focused on the site of inflammation, they experienced greater local discomfort, but the biological inflammatory response—swelling and redness—decreased significantly. The irritated skin areas recovered and subsided much faster compared to cases involving distraction or dissociation from the injury.

Scientists attribute this phenomenon to the fact that attention enhances the clarity of sensory signals sent to the brain, allowing it to gather more accurate information and regulate the immune response through multiple neural pathways, particularly the parasympathetic nervous system. Researchers monitored the activity of this system by tracking differences in participants’ heart rate variability.

Despite these promising results, which enhance understanding of the link between the brain and immune functions, researchers caution against generalizing the findings clinically or overinterpreting them. This is because the study involved a limited sample and was restricted to a model of temporary skin inflammation. It remains unknown how applicable these findings are to chronic diseases or epidemics.
