Sudanese Foreign Minister: Kuwaiti humanitarian aid to our people is highly appreciated and reflects the depth of our fraternal relations

Sudanese Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Mahieddin Salim expressed his country’s appreciation for the significant humanitarian efforts undertaken by the Kuwait Red Crescent Society in supporting the Sudanese people, which underscores the deep fraternal and historical ties binding the two countries and their peoples.

Speaking to KUNA following his visit to the Kuwait Red Crescent Society’s headquarters, Minister Salim stated that the visit was intended to convey gratitude on behalf of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council Chairman, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Prime Minister Dr. Kamal Idries, and the Sudanese people, to the State of Kuwait and the Kuwait Red Crescent Society for their continuous humanitarian efforts and their support for the people of Sudan.

He added that the Kuwait Red Crescent Society was among the first to reach those in need and affected in Sudan, and at various stages, it preceded many other bodies and organizations in delivering aid to its rightful recipients, reflecting the deep bonds between the two peoples and the Kuwaitis’ commitment to standing by their brothers in all circumstances.

He clarified that Kuwaiti support for Sudan has not ceased since the onset of the crisis, with aid and relief flights continuing across different phases. He noted that he had closely observed these efforts during his previous tenure in Kuwait, as well as during his responsibilities related to relief operations in Sudan.

Minister Salim pointed out that Sudan is currently transitioning from a relief phase to one of recovery and reconstruction. He emphasized that the Kuwait Red Crescent Society is also proactive in preparing for this phase by initiating serious and organized work to develop joint plans and programs aimed at supporting recovery and reconstruction efforts.

He remarked that, for the Sudanese people, Kuwait is not merely a sister state but holds a firm place in their hearts and consciousness. He stressed Sudan’s solidarity with Kuwait and its readiness to stand by its side and serve as a pillar of support in all circumstances and stages.

Minister Salim expressed his sincere gratitude and appreciation to the people of Kuwait, its leadership, and its humanitarian institutions for their stance toward Sudan, praying to God to perpetuate the blessings of security, stability, and prosperity upon Kuwait and to protect it and its people from all harm.

For his part, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Kuwait Red Crescent Society, Khaled Al-Mughams, told KUNA that the Society has been and remains present alongside its brothers in the sister Republic of Sudan, in line with the State of Kuwait’s entrenched humanitarian approach and its constant desire to extend a helping hand to affected peoples in various circumstances and crises.

Al-Mughams added that the Society swiftly launched an aerial relief bridge to Port Sudan following the outbreak of the crisis in 2023, carrying approximately 350 tons of medical, food, and shelter supplies. He noted that Kuwait allocated $6 million for humanitarian support in Sudan, split equally between the Kuwait Red Crescent Society and the Kuwait Relief Association, with $3 million designated for each entity.

He explained that the Society’s efforts expanded in 2024 with the dispatch of three relief ships carrying approximately 545 tons, including medications for cancer patients, around 1,000 hygiene kits, and food and relief supplies. Additionally, eight air flights were conducted carrying about 140 tons of aid in response to victims of floods and flash floods, including food items, blankets, health supplies, wheelchairs, crutches, and ambulances.

He indicated that the relief bridge continued into 2025 through two air flights, each carrying approximately 40 tons of tents, food baskets, blankets, and basic necessities. He also mentioned the signing of a $2 million agreement with the International Committee of the Red Cross to support the sustainability of healthcare and enhance access for vulnerable communities in Sudan.

Al-Mughams clarified that the Society’s interventions were not limited to emergency relief; they also included projects to support basic services and the distribution of sacrificial meat to 1,414 families in shelters in Port Sudan, alongside cooperation with humanitarian and health partners to strengthen the capacity of affected communities to cope with the crisis’s repercussions.

He reiterated the commitment to continuing support for the brothers in Sudan and enhancing cooperation with the Sudan Red Crescent and humanitarian partners to help meet humanitarian needs, support recovery efforts, and improve basic services for those affected.
