Arsenal, the holders of the English Premier League title, begin their new season campaign against newly promoted Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium in the opening round of the Premier League. The Gunners hope to retain their title and continue their dominance in the world’s strongest competition, while Coventry City aims to achieve a historic start against England’s champions in the season opener.
The English Premier League Association has decided to delay the start of the new season by two weeks from the usual date, aiming to give players additional rest following their participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which was held for the first time with 48 national teams in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The Premier League stated that the decision was made to maintain player fitness and reduce fixture pressure, especially given the congested season schedule due to domestic, continental, and international commitments.
Manchester United will kick off their campaign in the competition tomorrow evening on Saturday when they visit Hull City, hoping to return to title contention. Meanwhile, Crystal Palace will face Everton, Sunderland will play Ipswich Town, Leeds United will take on Nottingham Forest, and Tottenham will meet Brentford. The opening round will continue on Sunday evening with three matches: Aston Villa will face Brighton, Manchester City will host Bournemouth, and Liverpool will undertake a tough test against Newcastle United. The first round will conclude on Monday with a London derby between Chelsea and Fulham.
Despite limited transfers and intense competition, Manchester United, under the leadership of their young manager Michael Carrick, aims to return to the top and win the title for the 21st time. However, Michael Carrick’s return to Old Trafford last January revealed that the team is capable of competing. United played 17 matches and accumulated 39 points, three more than Arsenal, four more than Manchester City, and a gap of about 14 points behind Liverpool, and 18 points behind Chelsea. United could have claimed to be the best team in the league during the second half of last season, although at that time the competition was focused on qualifying for the UEFA Champions League, while their rivals’ schedules were congested with European and cup matches.
In other news, Tottenham is holding talks with Manchester City to sign Brazilian forward Savinho and Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush, according to British media reports yesterday. Savinho’s name had been linked with Tottenham for the first time in 2025, when the 22-year-old winger chose to stay at the Etihad Stadium. However, BBC and Sky Sports reported that Savinho, who started only seven Premier League matches last season, is now ready to leave the Citizens after joining the club from French side Troyes for £30 million ($41 million) in 2024.
As for Marmoush, who joined City for £59 million ($80 million) from German club Eintracht Frankfurt in 2025, he was excluded from Spanish manager Pep Guardiola’s plans at certain points last season. The 27-year-old scored eight goals in 36 matches across all competitions.
Tottenham’s Italian manager, Roberto De Zerbi, has rebuilt the north London club’s midfield during the summer transfer window by signing Portuguese midfielder Matheus Fernandes from West Ham and Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United, for a total fee estimated at £185 million.
