Schadenfreude

Schadenfreude has afflicted some diseased souls, a debilitating malady. Where are these individuals in light of the Almighty’s words: “Allah does not like the public mention of evil except by one who has been wronged. And ever is Allah Hearing and Knowing” (Quran, An-Nisa: 148).

Taking pleasure in others’ misfortunes, schadenfreude, and rejoicing in the tragedies and sorrows of others have nothing to do with Islam. Such behavior is despicable, contradicts noble morals, and opposes sound Islamic nature. Religiously, it is impermissible to follow this base conduct. Even your enemy should not be a source of joy when struck by calamity. Hence, I say: We must bear in mind the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: “Do not show schadenfreude to your brother, lest he be mercifully relieved and you be tested” (narrated by At-Tirmidhi). As you judge, so you will be judged. Allah may test you with a calamity without your knowing. The poet spoke wisely:

When time brings hardship upon a people,

Its yoke settles upon others.

Say to those who gloat over us: “Awake!

The gloaters shall receive what we have received.”

Schadenfreude becomes most dangerous when it is displayed openly before people, especially on social media platforms accessible to all. No normal person rejoices in others’ misfortunes. It was said to Job (peace be upon him): “What was most painful for you in your trial?” He replied: “The schadenfreude of his enemies.”

Some have gone beyond the limit in gloating over death. This behavior is among the most severe forms of schadenfreude. I do not believe the perpetrator is in a sound state of mind, having had mercy and humanity stripped from his heart, forgetting that the world is transient and time does not remain constant. Take utmost care against gloating over people and rejoicing in their misfortunes, for these are among the causes of ruin.

May you remain safe and well.
