Remains of Belgian climbers who disappeared in 1992 found in the Alps
Remains of Belgian climbers who disappeared in the Swiss Alps 34 years ago have been found following the melting of the Trift Glacier, police announced. On July 26, 2026, a hiker reported discovering human remains on the glacier in southern Switzerland, near the Italian border, according to a statement from the Valais cantonal police. The remains were transferred to the forensic medicine institute at Valais Hospital in Sion for identification. The statement added: “Direct DNA comparison has officially confirmed that the remains belong to two climbers who went missing in the Weissmies area in 1992.” The two Belgians were 39 and 41 years old at the time of their disappearance. The Valais police maintain a missing persons list dating back to 1925, most of whom were lost in high mountains or along riverbanks.
