A mountain on Mars surpasses Everest by three times... Why is it the tallest in the solar system?

Olympus Mons on the surface of Mars is the tallest mountain and the largest known volcano in the solar system, with a height ranging between 22 and 25 kilometers—more than three times the height of Mount Everest. According to a report published by Al Jazeera.net, the exceptional size of this volcano is due to the absence of active tectonic plates on Mars, which allowed lava flows to accumulate over the same site for millions of years without crustal movement, as occurs on Earth.

The planet’s low gravity, which is about 38% of Earth’s gravity, along with the lack of strong erosional forces such as rivers, rain, and glaciers, has helped preserve the mountain’s height and massive structure over long periods. Scientists note that studying Olympus Mons provides important insights into Mars’s geological history and aids in understanding the evolution of rocky planets and the possibility of past thermal activity that may have provided environments suitable for microbial life in the past. These studies are gaining increasing importance as preparations continue for future Mars exploration missions, which aim to uncover more secrets of the Red Planet.
