After heart surgery: Rare case sees advanced skin cancer, present for years, disappear

In a rare medical case that has attracted researchers’ attention, an Australian man in his mid-60s entered complete remission from advanced skin cancer following open-heart surgery that was complicated by a severe infection, although scientists have not yet been able to pinpoint the exact cause.

According to a case report published in BMJ Case Reports, the patient had stage 4 melanoma that had spread to the lymph nodes, liver, and bones. He had previously received targeted therapy, which was discontinued due to severe side effects.

After undergoing open-heart surgery to replace the aortic valve and address coronary artery issues, the patient developed an infection that required additional surgery and antibiotic treatment. Weeks later, examinations revealed the disappearance of visible cancerous lesions, and the remission persisted for approximately six years.

Researchers suspect that the surgery or the infection may have triggered a strong immune response that helped the body attack the tumor. However, they emphasize that this single case does not prove that surgery or infection can be used as a treatment for cancer.
