Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmi called on Britain to play a more effective political role in halting Israeli occupation attacks in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, ensuring the delivery of aid, and supporting a two-state solution. The Arab League stated in a Tuesday press release that this appeal was made during Fahmi’s meeting with British Minister of State for the Middle East and North Africa Stephen Doughty, who was visiting Cairo.
The statement added that Fahmi appreciated Britain’s recognition of the State of Palestine and emphasized the importance of building on this step to help stop the ongoing Israeli occupation attacks and violations in Gaza and the West Bank, ensure the unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid, and enable Palestinian institutions to fulfill their responsibilities, thereby preserving the prospect of a two-state solution and paving the way for an independent Palestinian state.
Fahmi stressed that the Israeli occupation’s continued serious and repeated violations of international law and international humanitarian law, without accountability or a genuine deterrent, were undermining the credibility of the entire international system. He warned that the growing erosion of respect for the rules and norms of international law, along with the selective application of these rules or tolerance of their violation, would entrench a logic of power over law, undermining the foundations of the international system and its capacity to maintain peace and security.
Regarding developments in the Arabian Gulf, Fahmi reiterated the Arab League’s condemnation of overt Iranian attacks and assaults on several Gulf Arab states and their civilian and vital infrastructure, stressing that the security of Arab states is indivisible. He affirmed the League’s rejection of any infringement on the sovereignty of any Arab state under any pretext, and called for guaranteeing freedom of navigation and security in international maritime passages, and for not using them as tools for pressure or escalation, given the direct repercussions on regional security and stability, international trade, and energy markets.
On the situations in Syria, Lebanon, Sudan, and Yemen, Fahmi emphasized the importance of preserving the unity, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national institutions of Arab states, and supporting political solutions that end conflicts and alleviate civilian suffering.
At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides, according to the statement, affirmed the importance of developing cooperation between the Arab League and Britain in several areas of mutual interest, particularly those related to economic and social development.
