Chelsea owner Todd Boehly and board member Mark Walter are considering selling their stakes in the London club to its majority owner, Clearlake Capital. The two American billionaires, Boehly and Walter, were among the investors who partnered with Clearlake to buy Chelsea from former Russian owner Roman Abramovich for £2.5 billion ($3.3 billion) in May 2022.
Private investment firm Clearlake Capital currently holds 62% of Chelsea’s shares, while Boehly and Walter hold the remaining stake alongside Swiss investor Hansjörg Wyss. The group “Block Holdings,” which includes Boehly, Walter, and Wyss, controls 38% of the club’s shares.
Reports indicate that Boehly is dissatisfied with the direction Chelsea is heading, particularly regarding transfer policy, managerial appointments, and plans for a potential new stadium. Reports also suggest that Boehly and Clearlake have attempted to buy out each other’s stakes in Chelsea several times over the past two years.
According to reports, Boehly and Walter believe their stakes in Chelsea are worth approximately £5 billion if they decide to sell. The two men share a friendship and business partnership, having also jointly invested in the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team and its sister franchise, the Los Angeles Sparks women’s basketball team.
Chelsea finished last season in a disappointing 10th place in the English Premier League and appointed Spanish coach Xabi Alonso as the new manager. The club will begin the 2026-2027 season with a match against Fulham on August 24.
