Jaber Hospital Successfully Removes Cancerous Tumor from Girl's Leg and Preserves Limb Function

A multidisciplinary medical team at Jabir Al-Ahmad Hospital successfully performed a precise and complex surgery on a girl suffering from a cancerous tumor that had extended to involve the entire anterior compartment of the leg. The procedure combined safe tumor resection with functional reconstruction of the limb using advanced techniques for muscle and nerve transfer, as well as tissue repair.

The case required the removal of tumor-involved components of the anterior compartment, including muscles and tissues responsible for foot movement, which could have led to loss of foot-lifting ability and difficulty walking. Following tumor resection, intraoperative frozen section analysis was conducted. After confirming that the resection margins were free of tumor, the medical team immediately proceeded to the functional reconstruction phase.

The surgery involved transferring the long peroneal muscle to the anterior compartment of the leg, along with nerve transfer and reconnection procedures aimed at restoring movement and function. Significant soft tissue loss was reconstructed using a perforator-based surgical flap to provide necessary coverage and rebuild damaged tissues.

This achievement highlights the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in managing complex surgical cases, integrating various specialties to achieve therapeutic goals while preserving limb function and the patient’s quality of life as much as possible. It also demonstrates the advanced expertise and capabilities of national cadres in performing complex specialized surgeries in accordance with the latest medical practices employed in leading global centers. Furthermore, it reflects the continuous development of national healthcare institutions and their alignment with the latest global technologies and advancements in precise and specialized surgical fields.

This accomplishment is part of the Ministry of Health’s efforts to localize advanced medical expertise and technologies, strengthen the capacities of national personnel, and provide precise specialized treatment services to citizens within the State of Kuwait, thereby contributing to enhancing the quality of healthcare and expanding the scope of advanced medical services offered to patients.
