A controlled version of ChatGPT for teenagers supports "study mode" by avoiding direct answers

OpenAI has begun expanding its user protection measures for teenagers by launching the “ChatGPT for Teens” trial, which automatically applies additional safeguards to accounts likely belonging to users under 18, as part of an initiative that combines support for learning with enhanced digital safety.

According to Engadget, the trial includes educational tools such as “Study Mode,” which guides users step-by-step toward solutions rather than providing direct answers, along with features that help families manage service usage times.

On the safety front, OpenAI imposes stricter restrictions on sensitive content and inappropriate interactions for teenagers, with controls covering violence, self-harm, body image, and certain types of role-playing, alongside parental control tools, quiet hours, and alerts in high-risk situations.

The company uses an age-estimation system based on a range of account indicators and usage patterns to automatically steer suspected users under 18 into a more age-appropriate experience.
