Trump: I am not seeking to extend the memorandum of understanding with Iran, and our main goal is to prevent it from acquiring a nuclear weapon

US President Donald Trump said: “I am not seeking to extend the memorandum of understanding with Iran,” adding, “Our main goal is to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.”

Trump added in press remarks at the White House that Tehran wants to reach an agreement, but clarified: “Iran has not secured the deal that I consider essential.”

The US president reiterated that Iran will not obtain a nuclear weapon, noting that developing such a weapon “would take a long time after the strikes we carried out last summer on its nuclear facilities,” while also asserting that “Iran is in deep trouble, in a state of chaos, and its army has been completely defeated.”

Regarding the Strait of Hormuz, Trump said: “We control it through a naval blockade, and I like the idea of declaring it a US territory,” pointing out that it “remains open and we export millions of barrels of oil weekly, with oil prices continuing to fall.”
