The General Fire Force has warned against the dangers of leaving smartphones and other electronic devices, including tablets and laptops, plugged into a power source while in use or placing them on beds and flammable surfaces, emphasizing that battery overheating can lead to fires. In an awareness video, the Force stressed the importance of adhering to safety procedures when charging electronic devices, and cautioned against treating the charging process as a routine activity that can be left unattended. This is particularly relevant given that many mobile phone users place their devices next to them on beds while sleeping, with the devices remaining plugged in, which increases the likelihood of overheating and the associated risks.
The Force further emphasized that phones, tablets, or laptops should not be placed on beds, bedding, or any flammable surface while charging. It advised disconnecting devices from the power source once fully charged and avoiding leaving them plugged in for extended periods without need.
The Force confirmed that adhering to these simple preventive measures helps mitigate the risks of fires involving devices and batteries, urging the public to take seriously any abnormal rise in device or battery temperature, or any signs of damage.
The General Fire Force noted that in emergencies, individuals should immediately call the emergency number 112 and follow safety instructions. It reaffirmed that prevention begins with the correct use of electrical and electronic devices, especially within homes and during sleeping hours.
