Argentine legend Lionel Messi missed a penalty again and received a yellow card during a match in which his team, Inter Miami, suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to Nashville yesterday. The loss allowed Nashville to extend its lead over its rival in the Eastern Conference standings of Major League Soccer (MLS).
The first half saw Messi’s penalty saved by the goalkeeper, marking his third consecutive miss from the spot. The Argentine had also previously failed to convert penalties against Austria and Egypt during the 2026 World Cup, where his nation finished as runners-up to Spain. The 39-year-old forward received a caution in the 59th minute but managed to create his team’s only goal. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner also struck the post in stoppage time instead of scoring in the second half.
This was the former Barcelona star’s first match since the death of his father, Jorge Messi, on August 8 at the age of 68, following an illness.
Nashville moved to the top of the Eastern Conference with 43 points, five points clear of second-placed Inter Miami.
The Tennessee-based side had previously eliminated Miami from the CONCACAF Champions Cup round of 16 last March.
