Arsenal win the Community Shield after beating City 3-0

Arsenal rightfully claimed the English Community Shield for the 18th time in its history, defeating Manchester City 3-0 in the match held yesterday evening at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, UK. This victory raises Arsenal’s, nicknamed “The Gunners,” tally in the competition to 18 titles, placing them second on the list of English clubs with the most wins in this tournament, behind Manchester United, who lead with 21 titles.

Manchester City remains on 7 titles, having finished as runners-up on 10 other occasions.

The two teams first met in the Community Shield in the mid-1930s. A century later, they faced each other again for the second time, having last met prior to the start of the 2023-2024 season.

Both teams qualified for this year’s Community Shield after Arsenal won the Premier League title last season, finishing first with 85 points, ahead of second-placed City, who accumulated 77 points.

Manchester City, currently managed by Italian coach Enzo Maresca, won the FA Cup under former manager Pep Guardiola, after defeating Chelsea 1-0 in the final.

“The Gunners” entered the match with explosive force, as defender Riccardo Calafiori netted a historic goal just 23 seconds after the opening whistle, scoring the fastest goal in the 118-year history of the Community Shield. City, in their first official match under new manager Enzo Maresca, attempted to respond and regroup by dominating possession, but Arsenal’s defensive discipline prevented them from creating any real threat against goalkeeper David Raya.

In the 28th minute, German striker Kai Havertz capitalized on a precise pass to extend his team’s lead to 2-0, exploiting clear defensive confusion from “The Citizens.” The first half ended 2-0 in favor of last season’s league champions.

Arsenal replicated the first-half scenario with precision that troubled their opponents. New signing Ricardos Tzolilis disrupted City’s defense and passed to Martin Ødegaard, who finished the move brilliantly by dribbling past goalkeeper Donnarumma to score his team’s third goal (48th minute), decisively ending City’s hopes of a comeback.

Arsenal players enjoyed the remaining minutes of the match, while Enzo Maresca’s team appeared lost and confused in both attack and defense, failing to score even a consolation goal in their first competitive match of the season.
