Arsenal and Manchester City will kick off the English football season this evening in a major clash for the FA Community Shield, a match contested between the winners of the previous season’s Premier League and FA Cup.
Both teams share a common ambition to win the title: Arsenal aims for its 18th Premier League crown, while Manchester City seeks its eighth. Under the guidance of Spanish manager Mikel Arteta, Arsenal is looking to prove its worth after winning last season’s title, aiming to secure the league’s 18th championship. Meanwhile, the Citizens, led by their new Italian manager Enzo Maresca, hope to claim their eighth title.
Last season witnessed a fierce battle between the Gunners and City, with Arsenal leading by as much as 12 points at certain stages. However, some setbacks significantly narrowed the gap to just two points. Ultimately, Arsenal held firm to clinch the title for the first time in 22 years.
Despite this achievement, Arteta’s side faced criticism throughout the season from former stars and analysts, who argued that the team’s performance was not always convincing. Critics also pointed to the use of controversial tactics, such as provocative corner kicks, which have become a significant scoring weapon for Arsenal.
The league champions’ transfer market was relatively quiet, with Arsenal signing Newcastle United playmaker Bruno Guimarães in a deal worth approximately £75 million. The club also purchased the contract of Ecuadorian defender Piero Hincapié from Bayer Leverkusen, after he had spent the previous season on loan with them, and added Greek winger Christos Tzolis from Belgian club Club Brugge.
The Community Shield is the most recent trophy won by Arteta with Arsenal. Entering his eighth year as manager, Arteta has won the competition twice previously and is aiming for a third. Notably, he also won the title as an assistant coach at Manchester City under Pep Guardiola. Guardiola will experience his first season away from City in 10 years. Despite this, Arteta’s record against Manchester City is not favorable; they have met 17 times, with Arteta winning four, drawing three, and losing 10. The most recent encounter was a 2-1 defeat last season, which brought City closer in the title race before Arsenal ultimately secured the championship.
On the other side, Enzo Maresca is well aware that starting the season with a Community Shield victory would be ideal. Although the trophy is not among the club’s primary targets, it serves as a significant morale boost ahead of a long and demanding season.
Similar to Arsenal, Manchester City had a quiet summer transfer window. The club signed former Marseille goalkeeper Germán Pezzella, while goalkeeper James Trafford moved to Leeds United. City also renewed the contract of Belgian winger Jeremy Doku. Meanwhile, uncertainty looms over the future of one of the team’s key players, Spanish midfielder Rodri, who recently led his national team to World Cup victory and was named the tournament’s best player.
The match will be held at the Principality Stadium in the Welsh capital, Cardiff, instead of Wembley Stadium. The game was initially without an Arabic broadcaster, but beIN Sports network announced it has acquired the broadcasting rights. The match will be aired on beIN SPORTS 1 at 5:00 PM.
