One Recommendation Ruins 25 Acres of Crops: Farmer Trusts Artificial Intelligence

A Chinese farmer’s experience with artificial intelligence turned from a helpful management tool into a significant loss after he followed an automatically generated agricultural recommendation without consulting experts.

The website Futurism reported that the 67-year-old farmer in Chuzhou, China, began using a chatbot about a year ago to obtain agricultural guidance, after earlier results had boosted his confidence in the technology.

However, he later decided to apply a recommendation related to weed and pest control to approximately 25 feddans of sesame seedlings without verifying it with an agricultural expert. According to reports, the seedlings began to wither and deteriorate within about a day of implementing the recommendation.

The incident highlights the importance of treating AI outputs as information that requires verification, particularly when they relate to professional or agricultural decisions that may result in financial losses, and underscores that they should not be relied upon as a substitute for expert opinion.
