Fire in western Germany prompts evacuation of 1,800 people

Around 1,800 residents of a town in western Germany were forced to evacuate their homes due to a wildfire that consumed approximately 300 hectares and drew dangerously close to residences, authorities announced on Friday. Helicopters and military equipment were deployed to combat the country’s largest forest fire of the summer.

The flames approached homes in the village of Geil, located within the Hürtgenwald region of Germany, near the borders with Belgium and the Netherlands. On Friday, the fire’s area expanded from 25 hectares to 300 hectares. Authorities warned that weather conditions would complicate firefighting efforts, noting that the threat to evacuated homes remains.

Peter Berndgen, a spokesperson for the local fire department, told the Bild newspaper that climatic factors have made “conditions unfavorable for fighting forest fires,” citing dry air, strong winds, and high temperatures. He added that the firefighting operation could take several days.

Due to strong winds, the fire reached within 100 to 150 meters of homes in Hürtgenwald. Authorities indicated there were no signs of a imminent return for evacuated residents.

The local government stated in a Friday statement that it had requested reinforcements. Explosions were heard overnight as the fire spread to ammunition from World War II remnants, hindering firefighting efforts in the mountainous Eifel region of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Approximately 300 personnel are participating in the firefighting operation, supported by helicopters and military machinery. Through its website, Hürtgenwald authorities urged residents to take “only essential personal supplies.”

In recent weeks, limited wildfires have broken out in German forests due to drought and successive heatwaves.
