Could Earth Collide with a Rogue Black Hole? Scientist Clarifies the Scale of the Threat

Despite the frightening image associated with black holes, an astrophysicist confirms that the likelihood of a free-floating black hole passing near the Solar System, let alone colliding with Earth, remains extremely low according to current scientific estimates. Sergey Popov, a researcher in theoretical astrophysics and cosmology at the Space Research Institute of the Lebedev Physical Institute, told the Russian news agency Novosti that scientists have detected two free-floating black holes in the Milky Way galaxy, clarifying that such objects do not pose an expected threat to Earth. He pointed out that black holes are often difficult to detect directly unless they interact with significant amounts of matter; therefore, scientists rely on the phenomenon of “gravitational lensing” to identify them. This phenomenon occurs when the gravity of a massive object affects the path of light coming from a distant star, leading to changes that astronomical instruments can detect and analyze. Telescopes monitor millions of stars in search of these signals, which helps researchers discover invisible objects and study their distribution. In conclusion, according to the scientist’s statements, the scenario of a free-floating black hole approaching Earth remains a very remote possibility.
