Qatar, Egypt, and Morocco announce full support for Infantino

The presidents of six Arab football federations, including Qatar, Egypt, and Morocco, have expressed their “full support” for FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who is facing mounting pressure. Infantino is struggling to retain his position amid a wave of criticism following the cancellation of his plan to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors.

Pressure on Infantino was intensified this week by the continental confederations of European football (UEFA), North, Central America and Caribbean (CONCACAF), and Asian football (AFC) in a joint letter. In a joint statement on Thursday, the presidents of the federations of Qatar, Egypt, Morocco, Mauritania, Lebanon, and Sudan said, “We express our full support for Mr. Gianni Infantino, President of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), and reaffirm our confidence in his leadership and his ongoing commitment to developing football worldwide.”

The statement added, “We deeply appreciate Mr. Infantino’s continuous efforts to advance football globally, expand opportunities in all regions, and strengthen the role of the game in bringing peoples and societies closer together.”

It continued, “We look forward to continuing our close cooperation with him to build a stronger and more prosperous future for global football, by expanding opportunities and enhancing the contribution of Arab football to the game at the international level.”
