"Leap of a Lifetime" in the Sun: Spanish Skier Steals the Spotlight in Eclipse Scene

Spanish skier Dani León stole the spotlight that surrounded the total solar eclipse, executing a stunt jump in front of the sun’s disk as the moon passed in front of it, in a shot that quickly went viral on social media platforms.

León posted the clip on his official Instagram account, describing the project as the “jump of a lifetime” and captioning it with the phrase “eclipse mode.”

The video begins with a wide-angle shot showing León standing beside a ramp erected in an open area, with the obscured sun approaching the horizon. The clip then shifts to a closer angle, capturing the skier inside the sun’s disk during the jump.

In his post, León noted that the project involved a team of photography and video specialists, along with a company specializing in building ski ramps, and confirmed that details about the execution would be revealed later.

The realism of the scene sparked doubts and questions among followers regarding the possibility of using artificial intelligence or photo manipulation. However, the wide-angle shot included with the clip shows the ramp, the skier, and the photographers preparing for the jump.

Available footage indicates that the shot relied on aligning the skier with the sun from a distance, using a lens that makes background celestial bodies appear larger and closer than foreground elements.

León had previously executed a similar visual project in front of the moon in collaboration with the well-known astrophotographer “Jaycano.”

The Spanish newspaper “AS” reported that the previous images were captured using forced perspective, with the photographer standing approximately 500 meters from the skier and coordinating his movements via phone with the moon’s motion.

According to the newspaper, followers initially believed the images were AI-generated, before it became clear they were the result of careful planning and calculated choices regarding the shooting location and lens.

According to the official Olympic Games website, León is one of Spain’s most prominent skiers and represented his country in skiing competitions at both the Tokyo and Paris Olympic Games.

Spanish sports sources also describe him as one of the leading specialists in jumps and aerial maneuvers, known for executing projects that combine skiing with visual photography.

The jump coincided with the total solar eclipse witnessed in Spain on the evening of the previous day. According to Spain’s National Geographic Institute, this was the first total solar eclipse visible from the Iberian Peninsula in over a century.
