Syria submitted an official letter to United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and the President of the UN Security Council, expressing its protest, condemnation, and firm rejection of Colombia’s recognition of what it termed “Israeli sovereignty” over the occupied Syrian Golan.
Syria strongly condemned the statement issued by Colombia’s Ministry of Foreign Relations on August 10, which recognized what it called “Israeli sovereignty” over the occupied Syrian Golan, affirming that the Golan is an inseparable part of its territory.
Damascus clarified that the Colombian government’s statement constitutes a blatant violation of the UN Charter, the statements of its Secretary-General António Guterres, who affirmed that the Golan is Syrian land, as well as the principle of the inadmissibility of the acquisition of territory by force, and UN Security Council Resolution 497 of 1981.
Syria reiterated its firm rejection of ongoing Israeli aggression and incursions into its territory, calling on all countries and international organizations to fulfill their responsibilities in respecting international law and UN resolutions. It affirmed its continued use of all legitimate diplomatic and legal means to defend its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and established rights, and to work toward the restoration of its occupied lands.
The Colombian decision has drawn widespread Arab and international condemnation and rejection, with reaffirmation that the Golan is Syrian land occupied by Israel.
It is worth noting that the UN Security Council issued Resolution 497 in December 1981, declaring that Israel’s decision to impose its laws, jurisdiction, and administration on the occupied Syrian Golan is null and void and has no international legal effect, and calling on Israel to rescind it.
