Istanbul Airport Upends Competitive Landscape, Surges to Top of Europe at Heathrow's Expense

Istanbul Airport claimed the top spot among Europe’s busiest airports in July, surpassing London’s Heathrow Airport after handling approximately 8.15 million passengers, compared to 7.86 million passengers at Heathrow, a margin of nearly 290,000 travelers.

Data on passenger traffic showed a 2.3% year-on-year increase in passenger numbers at Istanbul Airport, while Heathrow recorded a 1.5% decline compared to July of the previous year, amid growing pressure on its capacity. Additionally, passenger traffic on flights connected to Middle East routes via Heathrow fell by 20.2% during the month.

Heathrow had led European airports according to the annual statistics of the Airports Council International from 1996 until 2019, before losing its top position in 2020 due to the repercussions of the coronavirus pandemic and travel restrictions. It regained the number one spot in 2023 and held it until being overtaken by Istanbul Airport in July.

Heathrow continues to operate its two runways at near-maximum capacity, reinforcing its management’s calls for a third runway to increase capacity. The airport stated that it is “operating at full capacity” and that the need for expansion “has never been more evident than now,” following Istanbul’s rise, signaling intensifying competition among European aviation hubs and the growing connectivity of air travel between Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
