Barcelona loans Araújo to Liverpool

Barcelona announced yesterday the loan transfer of Uruguayan international defender Ronald Araújo to Liverpool for a one-year period. Araújo, 27, said in a statement to the English club: “I am very much looking forward to the start, and I am very, very happy.” Araújo is the second defender to join Liverpool during the summer transfer window, following young Frenchman Jeremy Jaguette, whom the club signed from French side Rennes for €63 million. These reinforcements aim to support veteran Dutch captain Virgil van Dijk in the heart of the defense, and to compensate for the departures of Englishman Reece Williams and Frenchman Ibrahima Konaté, who moved to Real Madrid. British news agency PA Media reported that Araújo, 27, reduced his salary to facilitate his move to Liverpool, which holds an option to buy the player for a pre-agreed sum, believed to be £47 million ($63.5 million), should the loan prove successful. Araújo is eager for the opportunity to play alongside Dutchman Virgil van Dijk, widely regarded as the best defender in the world, who remains highly esteemed internationally. Araújo told Liverpool’s official website: “We all know how great Virgil is as a player. He is a true reference for the team, and he also serves as a role model and reference for me personally.”
