European football fans’ eyes turn this evening to the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg, Austria, for the highly anticipated clash between UEFA Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain and UEFA Europa League champions Aston Villa, who will compete for the 51st edition of the UEFA Super Cup.

PSG enter the match with ambitions of retaining the Super Cup title for a second consecutive season, having defeated Tottenham Hotspur on penalties in last year’s final. The French side is led by Spanish manager Luis Enrique, who relies on a squad featuring some of the game’s top stars, including Ousmane Dembélé and Achraf Hakimi, alongside midfielders Vitinha, João Neves, and Fabián Ruiz.

Meanwhile, after Aston Villa won their first major trophy in 30 years, two of their key stars departed: English striker Morgan Rogers and Belgium captain Youri Tielemans. The club quickly moved to replace them by signing Argentine Alejandro Garnacho, Brazilian João Gomes, and Swiss star Johan Mazambé.

UEFA appointed Somali referee Omar Al-Artan to officiate the match, marking his debut in a fixture featuring the champions of the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League. The appointment was seen as a gesture of honor following his exclusion from entering the United States to officiate at the 2026 World Cup, despite holding a valid visa. Before making history as the first non-European referee to preside over a UEFA Super Cup match, Al-Artan urged aspiring referees to “never stop dreaming.”

The 34-year-old has established himself among Africa’s elite referees, having become the first Somali to officiate the CAF Champions League final and receiving the CAF African Footballer of the Year award for best referee. UEFA stated that the decision to appoint Al-Artan was made under a cooperation agreement signed with CAF earlier this year to strengthen ties between the two confederations.

Patrice Motsepe, CAF President, said: “This is a great honor for Omar and for African referees.”

The two teams had met only twice before, both in the quarter-finals of the 2024-2025 UEFA Champions League. Paris Saint-Germain won the first leg 3-1 at the Parc des Princes on April 9, 2025, before Aston Villa responded with a 3-2 victory in the second leg at their home ground on April 15, 2025. Despite the English side’s win in the return leg, PSG advanced to the next round. The two clubs will renew their rivalry more than a year later in a completely different contest, with the UEFA Super Cup title as the primary prize.
