Blue Turmeric Protects Us from Joint Damage
A recent study has shown that blue turmeric extract may protect joint cartilage cells from inflammation and damage. Researchers focused on a rare variety of turmeric known scientifically as Curcuma caesia, commonly referred to as blue turmeric or black turmeric. Laboratory analysis revealed that the rhizomes of this plant are rich in polyphenols, particularly epicatechin and vanillic acid, along with other compounds possessing antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Importantly, about 58% of these compounds retained a high level of bioavailability even after simulating the digestive process in the laboratory.
Scientists then treated human articular chondrocytes with the extract after pre-exposing them to interleukin, a substance that plays a key role in the development of arthritis. Pre-treatment with the extract significantly reduced cell damage, lowered the production of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), which triggers inflammation, protected mitochondria, and preserved the natural structure of cartilage cells. The results also showed that these protective effects persisted even after the extract was subjected to simulated digestion, enhancing the likelihood of its benefit when taken orally.
Researchers emphasize that the study was conducted only on cell cultures, so it is too early to discuss its therapeutic effects on humans. Nevertheless, the findings suggest that blue turmeric could become a promising functional food ingredient or the basis for future preventive treatments for arthritis, pending further studies in animals and humans.
In a separate recent scientific study, it was also revealed that consuming curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, together with vitamin D, may help slow down the degradation of articular cartilage in patients with arthritis.
