Germany strengthens its capabilities to counter drones after Leipzig airport incident

Germany is moving to expand its security capabilities in response to drone threats, following a security incident at Leipzig airport last week that prompted authorities to raise the alert level and strengthen protective measures.

On Monday, the German Interior Ministry announced that the number of personnel in the federal police unit specialized in countering drones will rise to 300, up from approximately 130 currently, and that the number of sites designated to handle such threats will double from four to eight.

According to the Associated Press, this step comes after authorities announced the discovery of a drone carrying an explosive device at Leipzig airport, a facility that plays a key role in transporting military equipment. German authorities have not yet identified the party responsible for the incident, although hypotheses suggesting a possible link to a foreign entity have been circulating, though these assessments have not been officially confirmed.

A specialized center dedicated to studying, developing, and testing technologies related to drone security is also scheduled to open on August 18, through cooperation between German government and research entities.

The new measures reflect a broader trend aimed at enhancing response speed to drone-related incidents and expanding security coverage across Germany.
